Actively looking for acquisition and investment opportunities

In addition to consulting, I invest in, joint-venture on, or buy businesses with £700K to £10M revenue and aim to scale up each business for retention, or exit via M&A. I add significant shareholder value by focusing on operational excellence and deploying an “improve and operate”, or a “buy and build” strategy. 

I’m interested in opportunities in the UK, Europe and USA and favour businesses with retiring owners seeking an exit to an experienced purchaser who aims to honour their legacy. 

Ideal Targets 

Having consulted, founded and acquired in many sectors, my ideal acquisition targets are not sector specific. But they tend to share some of the following characteristics:

• A fragmented and generally unsophisticated market; 

• Recurring revenue streams and/or B2B relationships; 

• Low-tech with scope for technology-enabled performance improvement; 

• A fragmented customer base; 

• Strong second tier management; 

• A people-centric culture, where employees and customers feel valued. 

What I Bring 

I am a principle-centred leader who seeks to build from the strengths already residing in a business. When acquiring, I aim to maintain the status quo while assessing for performance improvement and growth quick wins. Strategic changes are made in a collaborative fashion, involving people throughout the business. A particular strength is in building management teams, as well as identifying and developing talent. 

When joint-venturing, my partners share a bias for action, a commitment to adding value to a business and to treating people fairly, as well as offering skill sets complementary to my own. My main contribution is in applying 30 years of general management and consulting experience to identify and implement wide ranging actions for improved business performance. These drive shareholder value and sustainable growth. I’m determined to avoid “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” when making acquisitions and like to spend more time listening than talking. 

As an investor, I have a high appetite for risk and regularly invest in innovative challenger start-up businesses introducing a new, technology-enabled, business model.
